The city of Kennewick is home a number of parks, outdoor activities, and a strong tourism industry. Unlike many other cities within the Tri-Cities area the largest employer in the city of Kennewick is the Kennewick School District. Because of the large school board, the city has become known for the many opportunities that it offers its students, as well as the many additional educational and cultural opportunities for people of all ages throughout the city.
The city of Kennewick is home to a notably large school district, one that has grown to include close to fifteen elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools. The Kennewick School District has become known for its excellent quality of student life.
Throughout the years, the Kennewick School District has been recognized by a number of sources for their excellent academics, with many considering the school district one of the best in Benton County. Additionally, the Kennewick School District has become synonymous with exceptional extra-curricular programs, including soccer, instrumental music, track, basketball, and football. In June 2006, a national educational consulting and research firm presented the Kennewick District with the, “What Parents Want” Award. In the late 1990’s the Kennewick School District was also recognized for a number of reasons including its Accountability Program which was recognized in 1998 by the American School Board Journal; and the Grand Prize Magna Award for Board Leadership in 1997.
Over the last few years, the city of Kennewick has developed into an overall hub of fun, entertaining, and educational things to do for the whole family. Some of the most well-known and popular attractions include visiting Clover Island Arena, Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site, the International Bigfoot Conference – an annual and extremely popular education conference that takes place every fall, and the Ye Merrie Greenwood Renaissance Faire.
Unlike other cities in Benton County, and the Tri-Cities area, the largest employer in the city of Kennewick is the Kennewick District School Board. The Kennewick School District operates almost 20 schools total and offers classes from Kindergarten all the way through twelfth grade. The district serves over 15,000 students and employs more than 700 teachers. Additionally, because of a number of schools within the district, the Kennewick District School Board, also employs a high number of janitorial, administration, and health care staff.
